A Wet & Wild Week for MHS CTL

It was a wet and wild Practice Week 2 for the Marshall High School Clay Target League Team (MHS CTL) as Monday’s shoot night was cancelled due to a combination of rain and sleet that eventually turned to snow.  With rounds rescheduled for Wednesday and again on Saturday morning, the team found itself up against dreary and damp conditions, with skies opening up near the end of the midweek shoot, and a slight drizzle on Saturday.

Sophomore Eric Leach takes aim at a pair of 23s for a top-five finish in PW2.

Despite the conditions, scores rose across the board with Senior Captain Samuel Dieken logging the team’s first perfect round of the season, and the team’s overall average rose by 2.5 targets over Practice Week 1.

Dieken would log a 22 following his opening 25 for a total of 47, and would be joined by Junior Cody Kesteloot on rounds of 23 and 24 atop the leader board. Behind them, with totals of 46 were Karter DeSmet, Eric Leach, Andrew Mulso, Ryan VanMoer and Derrick VanOverbeke.  Top shooters for MHS CTL in Practice Week 2 were:

First       Last                    R1           R2           Tot
Samuel Dieken                25           22           47
Cody      Kesteloot            23           24           47
Karter   DeSmet               22           24           46
Eric         Leach                 23           23           46
Andrew   Mulso                22           24           46
Ryan      VanMoer             24           22           46
Derrick  VanOverbeke    23           23           46
John      Callens                 23           22           45
Nathan Leach                   22           23           45
Kaden   Strate                   22           23           45

“Our shooters have shaken out most of their jitters, settled in and are ready for the season,” said coach Nick Simonson, “and I’m excited to see where 2017 takes the team,” he concluded.

Up next for MHS CTL is the Reserve Week, where scores are held in case weather or other conflicts interfere with a week during the upcoming League Weeks from Apr. 24 to May 23.  The Reserve Week scores are also used as tiebreakers for any regular-season competition ties that may result, so while it isn’t an officially-counted week, the environment is more like a league week than a practice week.

MHS CTL is coached by a staff of 13 volunteers, and supported by a number of parents who help instruct, score and supervise 80 youth.  The program is funded by generous donations from a number of local conservation and sportsmen’s groups and area businesses including: Lyon County Pheasants Forever, Redwood River Sportsmen’s Club, National Wild Turkey Federation, Minnesota Trappers Association, Quality Deer Management Association, Marshall Radio, Lockwood Motors, ABRA Auto Body & Glass, Friends of the NRA, Gustafson C&C Course, Don & Gena Atcher.

MHS CTL Kicks Off 2017 Season

DiekenPW1.jpg

Captain Senior Samuel Dieken readies for his next shot.  Dieken would post a total of 48 to lead all MHS CTL Shooters in Practice Week 1.

MHS CTL Press Release

The Marshall High School Clay Target League Team (MHS CTL) kicked off its fourth season the week of April 3, with 80 shooters in grades seven through twelve taking to the trap houses at Redwood River Sportsman’s Club southeast of Marshall.  Led by Senior Captains Samuel Dieken and John Callens, the team was met by the usual gusty conditions that spring in southwest Minnesota is known for, but managed to shake off a winter’s worth of rust and post some very impressive numbers.

“With Monday’s north winds, and Saturday’s warm southerly gusts, we were up against what we normally face each spring on both of our shoot days,” said Coach Nick Simonson, “but I am impressed by the focus of our veteran shooters, and the skill showcased by a number of our new participants,” he concluded.

Dieken led all shooters in the first week of competition with a pair of 24s for a total of 48.  Senior Ryan Van Moer and Sophomore Jared Antony tallied totals of 46, and Sophomore Tylar Holmgren followed a round of 24 with a 20 for a total of 44

Top MHS CTL shooters for Practice Week 1 were:

First       Last                        R1           R2           Tot
Samuel Dieken                  24           24           48
Jared     Antony                 24           22           46
Ryan      VanMoer             23           23           46
Tylar      Holmgren            24           20           44
Owen    Banks                    20           23           43
Eric         Leach                    23           20           43
Nathan Leach                    21           22           43
Derrick  VanOverbeke    19           24           43
Nick       Atcher                  22           20           42
Ryan      Landmark            22           20           42
Kaden   Strate                    21           21           42
Cameron VanOverbeke                22           20           42

“Returning 15 of our top 20 shooters provides a strong leadership base, as was evident this week,” said Simonson, “many of those top shooters spent a great deal of time in the off-season honing their skills at various regional and local events and facilities – and it shows,” he concluded.

LCPF Banquet is Mar. 11 at SMSU in Marshall

PFlogo4cBIGLCPF Press Release

The 34th Annual Lyon County Pheasants Forever (LCPF) Spring Banquet will be held on Sat., Mar. 11, 2017 at 5:30 p.m. at The SMSU Convention Center in Marshall.  Tickets are immediately available for $60, which includes membership in LCPF for one year and the banquet meal. Youth “Ringneck” tickets are $30, and include a youth membership to LCPF and dinner.  Other household member dinner tickets are available for just $30, but must be purchased with a membership ticket.

“The banquet provides the bulk of our fundraising for multiple habitat and youth outdoors programs each year,” said LCPF President, Nick Simonson, “without the support of our great members, guests, sponsors and volunteers, this annual event and our projects wouldn’t be as wildly successful as they have been, and we’re looking to continue that tradition,” he continued.

The banquet helps provide free outdoors opportunities for area and visiting youth, like the annual mentor hunt.

At the 34th installment of the annual event, more than 40 guns will be up for grabs, along with over $30,000 in prizes, including prints, hunting equipment, gift certificates, and many other great items from area merchants, generous underwriters and sponsors of the event.  These items will be up for bid in both live and silent auctions, raffles and through games of skill and chance.

“We’ve got even more games than last year,” said LCPF Banquet Chair Harvey Noyes, “so hunters and fans of conservation can test their skill and luck while challenging their friends to have a great time,” he concluded.

But the banquet isn’t just about raising funds. Each year, the chapter honors its members who have put forth efforts above and beyond the call of conservation for their hard work and assistance in making the multiple events and projects successful. It is a time of recognition and honor for those who work tirelessly for wildlife and youth outdoors activities in our area. Between the prizes and the awards, the Banquet is a showcase of what the chapter’s efforts bring to the area.

More information on the banquet can be found on the LCPF website at www.lyoncountypf.org. Tickets for the event are available at Borch’s Sporting Goods gun counter in Marshall, or by contacting Ron Prorok, LCPF Treasurer at (507)401-6227.

Funds raised through the banquet and 20-prize raffle help fund four CTL teams and the Lyon County Sharpshooters program.

Last year, LCPF sponsored four area Minnesota High School Clay Target League Teams at Lakeview, Minneota, Tracy and Marshall High Schools, getting 170 kids involved in safe and enjoyable shooting sports competition.  Additionally, with the help of Legacy Funding, East Medicine PF, Canby PF, Minnesota PF and a number of local partner groups, the chapter is set to dedicate the James Meger Memorial WMA next fall as part of the 2017 Governor’s Pheasant Hunting Opener when the event returns to Marshall.

Those individuals or businesses interested in sponsoring the banquet can do so for $300; in return all Sponsors will receive a banquet ticket, be entered into a special Sponsor-only drawing for three CZ shotguns, receive one year of free advertising on the chapter website and be recognized in the banquet program.  All underwriters and donors of money or prizes to the event will also be recognized in the banquet program. For more information on sponsorships, underwriting or donations, contact the members listed above.

Additionally, tickets for the 20-prize Guns & Cash Raffle are in short supply, and are anticipated to be sold out prior to the banquet, so anyone in need of one leading up to the big drawing at the end of the event on Mar. 11 should purchase theirs now.  Some are still available at Borch’s Sporting Goods and Running’s in Marshall, or through chapter committee members. For more information on the Banquet, the Guns & Cash Raffle and other events, visit the chapter website at www.lyoncountypf.org, like the LCPF Facebook page at www.facebook.com/lyoncountypf, or follow the chapter on Twitter @lyoncountypf.
